The Best Pillow for Your Head
In addition to a quality mattress, fine bedding, and premium duvets, a pillow is highly decisive for a good night's rest. A high-quality pillow ensures that your head and cervical vertebrae lie in a relatively straight line with your spine. Your sleeping position, combined with the firmness of your mattress, primarily determines which sleep pillow is best for you.
Are you a back or side sleeper? Or do you mainly sleep on your stomach? The degree to which your shoulder sinks into your mattress is an important factor to consider. A side sleeper pillow is often slightly thicker than one for a back or stomach sleeper. This is simply because, in a side-lying position, there is a larger space between the head, neck, and mattress to fill. This is precisely why stomach sleepers and back sleepers are advised to choose a thinner pillow.
Choosing the right pillow is essential for healthy sleep and correct spinal alignment. Depending on your personal preference and sleeping position, the need for support and firmness varies. In this overview, we compare the key properties per sleeping position based on the Weids Living & Sleeping Pillow Guide.
| Question | Sleeping Position | Ideal Properties | Functional Goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best pillow for a side sleeper? | Side Sleeper | High and firm | Fill the space between shoulder and mattress |
| Pillow for a back sleeper? | Back Sleeper | Average height | Support without tilting the head forward |
| Thin pillow for a stomach sleeper? | Stomach Sleeper | Very low and soft | Keep the neck as unstrained as possible |
The Best Pillow for Everyone
Choosing the best sleep pillow can be quite a challenge. Do you go for a soft pillow or prefer a somewhat firmer one? It is important that the head and neck are well-supported during sleep. If that doesn't happen, there is a chance you will wake up in the morning with neck pain, which is of course not the intention. At Weids Living & Sleeping, you will find various pillow models filled with different materials such as wool, memory foam, latex, kapok, bamboo, and down.

Every person has their own sleep position and preferences. A good sleep pillow provides proper support for the head and neck. If you buy a budget pillow from a mass retailer, they are almost always without a zipper and filled with cheap synthetic fibers. For a short time, it might be an okay pillow for that price, but it will soon fail to provide adequate support. A common complaint of neck and shoulder pain often stems from a poor sleep pillow.
Prevent Neck Pain: The Best Pillow for Your Posture
- The correct firmness of your pillow depends on your shoulder width and the softness of your mattress. A natural latex or memory foam pillow offers constant support and relieves pressure on your joints.
- A high-quality ergonomic pillow keeps your neck and spine in a straight line. This prevents muscle tension, allowing you to sleep deeper and wake up feeling refreshed.
Do You Get Hot Quickly at Night?
Tip from our Sleep Expert, Goedele: "Choose materials such as a molton pillowcase or a wool pillow cover. These regulate your body temperature optimally and ensure a dry sleep climate."
Which Pillow Fits Me?
Sleeping position is an important factor to consider when buying a sleep pillow. Most people sleep on their side, but there are also those who find sleeping on their stomach pleasant. Additionally, your sleeping position often changes during the night and that's good! This gives all the muscles in your body sufficient rest. A quality pillow that fits your sleeping position is therefore very important.
Point, Box, or Shape-Retaining Pillow:
Besides the filling, the shape of the pillow is decisive for the support of your neck and shoulders. A traditional pointed pillow offers flexibility, while a box pillow provides extra height for side sleepers. Looking for the most stable support? A shape-retaining pillow is often the best choice. Below you can see the main differences at a glance.
| Type of Pillow | Characteristics | Support | Sleeping Position | Malleability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pointed Pillow | Edges taper off into a point | Variable | Stomach / Back / Side | Very high (scrunchable) |
| Box Pillow | High, upright edges (box shape) | Medium to High | Side / Back | Good (filling shifts less) |
| Shape-Retaining | Fixed core (latex or memory foam) | Maximum / Stable | Side / Back | None (retains fixed shape) |
Pillows to Dream On
When you go to sleep, you must be able to relax optimally. A quality pillow is of great importance for this. Choose your pillow with care. Decide for yourself what you find pleasant—a soft pillow or rather a firmer one. At Weids Living & Sleeping, you will find an extensive range of pillows. Whether it's a side sleeper pillow or a pillow for a stomach sleeper, we have the best pillow for everyone. Even if you share a bed with your partner, it's wise for both to buy a pillow that fits individual sleeping positions and preferences. This way, you can both enjoy a good night's rest and wake up every morning fresh and rested.

The Filling of the Pillow
For the filling of pillows, choices usually include down, kapok, wool, or synthetic sleep beads. They all have their own specific characteristics. One is soft, another a bit firmer. Some fillings feel wonderfully cool, others are nice and warm. Depending on your preference, you decide which filling your pillow should have. Almost all our pillows are equipped with a zipper. We find this extremely important because you can ultimately determine the height/lowering and softness/hardness yourself by simply removing or adding some filling. Only the down pillows do not have a zipper. This is because otherwise, the down filling would immediately fly in all directions upon opening...
Choose the Right Pillow Filling That Best Fits Your Sleep Position
A pillow is the key to an ergonomic night's rest. The right filling ensures that your neck and spine lie in a straight line, whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach. From the excellent moisture absorption of wool to the pressure-relieving properties of memory foam: each material has unique characteristics. In this overview, we compare the most popular fillings:
| Filling | Moisture Regulation | Malleability | Sleeping Position | Main Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Down | Good | Very high | All (stomach/back/side) | Luxury feel, "sleeping on clouds" |
| Wool | Excellent | Average | Back / Side | Very resilient and never clammy |
| Tencel | Extremely high | Good | All | 100% natural bacteria inhibition |
| Silk | Extremely high | High | All (stomach/back/side) | 100% natural bacteria inhibition |
| Kapok | Very good | Excellent | All (especially side) | Perfect for 'scrunching' as desired |
| Foam/Latex | Moderate | Shape-retaining | Back / Side | Optimal pressure relief for neck/head |
| Bamboo/Cotton | Very good | Good | All | Wonderfully cool and fresh sleep climate |
| Synthetic | Average | Good | All | Anti-allergic and easily washable |
Side Sleeper Pillow, Ergonomically Perfect Support
If you often sleep on your side, a side sleeper pillow is perfect. There are various ergonomic pillows that are suitable for side sleepers. These are: box pillows, neck support pillows, and pillows with the fillings: latex, wool, and memory foam. A side sleeper pillow offers firm but soft support for a seamless connection to the shoulder and neck. This truly makes a comfortable difference for the regular side sleeper. Many pillows are not specifically manufactured as side sleeper pillows in structure. It is desirable for many side sleepers to realize this during orientation or when buying a side sleeper pillow.
Our Silvana Support pillow is by far the best-selling orthopedic pillow for side sleepers. Also recommended by many physiotherapists. The Silvana Support pillow is available in 6 different versions, from extremely soft to perfectly firm.

Stomach Sleeper or Back Sleeper Pillow
For a stomach sleeper, a flat pillow is the solution. Down pillows and kapok pillows are suitable for people who like to sleep on their stomach. Down has a high volume but sinks well under the weight of your head. This makes the pillow pleasantly flat. A kapok pillow is the perfect pillow for when you love to fluff up your pillow before going to sleep and shape it to the desired sleep position for that moment. However, a wool pillow is our recommendation. This is because wool as a filling ventilates best. You can therefore safely lie with your nose in the wool and still receive sufficient oxygen.
Additionally, all pointed pillows equipped with a zipper are suitable, as you can remove the filling. If you are looking for a shape-retaining pillow, make sure to choose a low model.
Back sleepers should ensure that the pillow is slightly higher at the neck than at the back of the head. Down and kapok pillows are extremely malleable and recommended for back sleepers. We can wholeheartedly recommend the down Suverein pillow, bamboo pillow, or bamboo-kapok pillow.
The Best Pillow for Sleep Problems
Besides the sleeping position, specific physical complaints play a decisive role in choosing the right pillow. Whether it's relieving neck and shoulder pain or reducing snoring: an ergonomic adjustment can make the difference. In the overview below, we compare solutions for the most common sleep problems:
| Problem | Type of Pillow | Ideal Properties | Functional Goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is the best pillow for neck pain? | Orthopedic / Ergonomic | Pressure-relieving memory foam | Optimal alignment of cervical vertebrae |
| Which pillow helps against snoring? | Anti-snore pillow | Specific shape for head/jaw | Keeping the airways clear |
| Pillow for shoulder complaints? | Pillow with shoulder cutout | Contoured shape with cutout | Reduce pressure on the shoulder joint |

Frequently Asked Questions About Pillows
What is a good pillow?
What constitutes a good pillow is different for everyone. First of all, it's good to know your sleeping position. Are you a stomach, side, or back sleeper, or do you change positions during the night? The latter is the case for most people. In that case, we recommend a pillow that fits a varying sleep position well. The filling and shape of the pillow determine the level of support. To properly determine which pillow suits you, we recommend using our pillow guide. We use a number of targeted questions to determine which pillow is suitable for you.
Which pillow fits me?
There are an enormous number of types of pillows. The material with which pillows are filled also comes in many different types. Each material has its own properties. A wool pillow stands out particularly for its moisture absorption, so the pillow never feels clammy. Tencel is unique in its kind and absorbs as much as 150% more moisture than cotton. You can easily order your pillow online so you can evaluate it at home. If you still can't figure it out online, feel free to visit our showroom. Here too, we can advise you well on which pillow is suitable for you. We have all pillows in stock!
What is a good sleep pillow?
We have many good sleep pillows in our assortment, in all types, sizes, and materials. A better question would be: what is the best pillow for me? Important for that question and choosing the right pillow is first of all the position in which you usually sleep. A side sleeper will need a higher pillow than someone who prefers to sleep on their back. Besides position, the filling of course also plays a role in the choice of a pillow. Whichever pillow you choose, it is important that it is aligned with your wishes. Our pillow guide leads you through a number of simple questions to the most suitable pillow for you.
Which pillow helps against neck pain?
Neck complaints often arise from poor spinal alignment. A pillow that properly fills the cavity between your shoulder and neck (such as an ergonomically shaped memory foam pillow) often provides the best support.
Is a memory foam pillow suitable for me?
Memory foam shapes itself exactly to your contours through body heat. This is ideal for people who need a lot of support, but it can feel warmer than pillows with a loose filling.
My pillow feels too hard or too soft, now what?
Many modern pillows are refillable. You can remove or add filling to determine the ideal firmness. If the pillow is not adjustable, it might not be the right match for your weight or mattress.
Does the firmness of my mattress influence my pillow choice?
Absolutely. With a soft mattress, you sink further in with your shoulders and need a lower pillow. With a firm mattress, you actually need a higher pillow to bridge the distance to your head.
Can I wash my pillow in the washing machine?
This depends on the filling. Synthetic pillows and down can often be washed at 40 or 60 degrees. Pillows made of memory foam or latex should usually not go in the washing machine as this damages the structure. Always check the care label.
How often should I air my pillow?
For optimal hygiene and freshness, we recommend fluffing up your pillow daily and opening the bedroom window. This helps body moisture evaporate.
When to replace a pillow?
The average lifespan of a pillow is approx. 5 years. This is of course highly dependent on the use and maintenance of the pillow. From a hygienic point of view, it is also wise to replace your pillow regularly. With a molton pillowcase, you extend the lifespan of your pillow significantly. A molton pillowcase protects your pillow from moisture stains and keeps your pillow nice and fresh and clean.
