Choosing a flat sheet?

A cotton flat sheet is available in several variations, each with its own specific characteristics. You can choose from, among others, a cotton flat sheet, percale cotton flat sheet, cotton sateen flat sheet and a flannel flat sheet. Below we have listed the different fabric types with a short explanation.

flat sheet

Cotton sheets

Cotton is a 100% pure natural product. It is the most commonly used and also the most versatile textile fibre. Cotton has, among other properties, excellent moisture absorption, ventilates well and insulates (breathes well), and can be washed at high temperatures.

Percale cotton flat sheet

Percale cotton is the finest and softest quality cotton. A fabric may only be called percale when it contains a specific number of threads per inch. A special weaving technique is used for this. Percale cotton and cotton sateen are very similar. However, percale cotton is less smooth (has less sheen) than cotton sateen. This is why some people prefer a percale cotton flat sheet over a cotton sateen flat sheet.

Cotton sateen flat sheet

Cotton sateen, like percale cotton, is a very fine, soft and supple fabric. Thanks to a special weaving technique, the threads can be woven very closely together. Sateen uses a so-called satin weave. This weave gives sateen its recognisable luxurious smooth and glossy look. The smoothness of cotton sateen also has a cooling effect. Besides its softness and luxurious appearance, this is one of the most commonly cited reasons for choosing a cotton sateen flat sheet.

Luxury and Sustainability: Discover bamboo, Tencel and silk sheets

Looking for the ultimate sleeping comfort? Choosing a bamboo sheet, Tencel sheet or silk sheet can transform your night’s rest. These materials are known for their superior softness, excellent thermoregulation and eco-friendly properties. Below we explain why these fabrics are the perfect choice for a healthy and luxurious sleep environment.

Bamboo sheet: Natural freshness and hygiene

A bamboo sheet is the ideal choice for people with sensitive skin or allergies. Bamboo fibre is naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic, giving dust mites and bacteria less chance. In addition, bamboo has an extremely high absorption capacity; it absorbs up to four times more moisture than traditional cotton. This creates a dry and fresh sleeping climate all year round.

Tencel sheet: Sustainable cooling from eucalyptus

The Tencel sheet (also known as Lyocell) is produced in an environmentally friendly way from eucalyptus wood. It is one of the most breathable fabrics in the world. Tencel feels silky soft and smooth on the skin, while offering a cooling effect that is even stronger than linen. For warm sleepers or during muggy summer nights, Tencel is the best choice for optimal ventilation and moisture regulation.

Silk sheet: The ultimate care for skin and hair

For those seeking pure luxury, a silk sheet is the undisputed winner. Besides its exclusive feel, silk has scientific benefits: its smooth structure reduces friction, which helps prevent wrinkles and reduces frizzy hair or split ends. Silk is also highly thermoregulating; it keeps you comfortably warm in winter and provides a pleasant coolness in summer.

Flannel sheet

Flannel is a textile made from loosely spun brushed cotton. This gives flannel a downy layer. As a result, a flannel sheet feels wonderfully soft and warm. Flannel also quickly absorbs your body heat and is able to retain it well. A flannel sheet is ideal for winter. Do you often feel cold in bed? Then we can also highly recommend a flannel sheet.

Have you also thought about the pillowcase? You can easily add this to your online order.

Which sheet is best for me?

Not all bedding is the same. The choice between cotton, linen or Tencel™ determines not only how your bed looks, but also how effectively your body regulates temperature during the night. Whether you’re a “hot sleeper” craving cooling comfort, or you love the hotel-luxury feel of smooth sheets: the table below helps you choose based on texture, breathability and ease of care.

Material Feel on the skin Breathability Moisture absorption Needs ironing?
Percale cotton Soft & cool Excellent Average Yes (for a crisp look)
Cotton sateen Smooth & supple Good Average No (easy-care / crease-resistant)
Linen Textured & airy Maximum Very high No (it’s meant to crease)
Flannel Super soft Good Very good No
Bamboo Supple & soft Very good Very high Light ironing
Tencel Silky soft & smooth Very good Extremely high No
Silk Smooth & supple Very good Extremely high No

Cotton under-sheet

A cotton under-sheet has many advantages. By using an under-sheet, you protect your duvet or blanket and your mattress. Our under-sheets are made exclusively from natural materials such as cotton. Cotton has excellent moisture absorption. This helps protect your mattress or duvet against perspiration, stains and dirt.

An under-sheet (often cotton) is sometimes confused with a fitted sheet. A fitted sheet has elastic and can be pulled tightly around the mattress, helping to minimise creases. An under-sheet has no elastic and is therefore not stretchy. This also means it takes up less space in your wardrobe. Under-sheets are still commonly used in hotels.

An under-sheet can be used in different ways. As mentioned, it can protect your mattress: the under-sheet is folded around the mattress (and possibly a molton mattress protector). Or you can sleep under it. A cotton under-sheet can be used as a layer under a duvet or blanket. This keeps your blanket cleaner and fresher for longer. Cotton sheets are also used on very warm nights to sleep under something cool and fresh. The fabric absorbs perspiration easily, helping you sleep dry and comfortable.

Mattress sheet as an under-sheet

A good sheet for your mattress is the basis of a great night’s sleep. For every mattress, there is a sheet in cotton, cotton sateen or flannel, available in colours such as white or black. The experience of true quality bedding on your skin cannot be denied. The difference is significant and creates a wonderful sensation, helping you invest in your sleep experience. Buying a mattress sheet (also known as an under-sheet, top sheet or flat sheet) from Weids Living & Sleeping has the advantage of being in stock and therefore delivered quickly.

With the wide selection of quality mattress sheets, you could say that Weids Living & Sleeping sets the standard. When it comes to sleep, Weids Living & Sleeping doesn’t joke yet many people still underestimate how important sleep is for balance in life.

Sheet, under-sheet, top sheet or flat sheet

Good-quality sheets are essential for a good night’s sleep. Without an under-sheet, top sheet or flat sheet, it can be very uncomfortable to lie with bare skin under rough material or fabric that is too warm. And since nothing is worse than investing in bedding that constantly needs replacing, you’ll want the best-quality sheets that last.

Over the years, sheets, under-sheets and top sheets , have been manufactured with high thread counts: the higher the thread count, the higher the quality. With modern manufacturing, thread count has become far less important today, especially when sheets are not 100% cotton. While we often see well-performing cotton sheets in the 300–500 thread count range, it is easy to inflate the number. It is therefore better to look at fibre content and construction to determine whether a set of top or under-sheets is truly good quality, so it can only improve your night’s sleep.

Frequently asked questions about sheets

What is the difference between a top sheet and a fitted sheet?

  • Fitted sheet: Has elastic corners and is pulled tightly around the mattress.
  • Top sheet (flat sheet): A rectangular piece of fabric without elastic. You use it under a blanket or duvet for extra hygiene, or on warm summer nights as the only covering.

What size sheet do I need for my mattress?

For a top sheet, you need to allow for enough tuck-in. For a 160x200 cm mattress, a sheet of at least 240x280 cm is usually recommended, so you can tuck it in properly under the mattress.

Where can you buy regular sheets?

Regular sheets are available in many places and from many retailers. You will also regularly find a wide range of bedding at discount stores nearby, including fitted sheets and standard sheets. These are often offered at very low prices. Even if the label says “cotton sheet” in large letters, the price may be suspiciously low. That is why we always advise checking the label carefully to confirm it is indeed 100% cotton and not a mix of cotton and polyester. Buy 100% natural sheets you can trust at Weids Living & Sleeping.

What is an under-sheet?

An under-sheet is a sheet, often made of cotton (but also available in flannel, for example). It is intended to protect your mattress or your blanket/duvet. You can fold the under-sheet around the mattress. An under-sheet has no elastic like a fitted sheet. Because it has no elastic, it can be folded and stored easily and takes up little space. An under-sheet is also very suitable as protection for a blanket, or to sleep under in summer.

How often should I change my sheets?

The general guideline is once a week. If you sweat a lot or sleep with pets, twice a week is recommended.

How often should you wash sheets?

Sheets are ideal as an extra layer to catch perspiration, dirt and stains, protecting your duvet, blanket or mattress. That is why we recommend washing your sheets weekly. We also advise airing your mattress and sheets daily. This keeps your bed fresh and significantly extends the lifespan of your mattress.

How should I wash sheets?

You can wash a sheet in the washing machine. Always follow the care label on your sheet, which states the exact temperature to use. You can often tumble dry a sheet (check the care label), but if you hang it to dry it often stays crease-free. With some fabric types, ironing is not necessary at all and you can fold and store it straight away.

At what temperature should I wash sheets?

For good hygiene (killing bacteria and dust mites), 60°C is the standard. White sheets can often be washed at 90°C, but this wears the fibres faster. For coloured sheets, use a mild detergent to help maintain colour.
