Luxury Pillowcases in All Sizes & Colours | Weids Living & Sleeping
Buying a pillowcase? Pillowcases come in many fabric types, colours and every pillow size. When buying a pillowcase, it’s worth considering what matters most to you: how it looks, whether it feels soft, whether it is gentle on your skin and hair, or whether you are mainly looking for protection for your pillow.
You buy a pillowcase first and foremost to help preserve your pillow. It protects your pillow from moisture marks and helps keep it fresh and clean. Besides its protective function, a pillowcase provides wonderfully soft comfort and, depending on the material, can also offer benefits for your skin and hair.
You place a pillowcase directly over your pillow, and then put the pillowcase that matches your duvet cover over it.

Pillowcases in every material
The best pillowcases are made from natural materials, such as cotton (percale and sateen), bamboo, Tencel or silk.
Often, you buy pillowcases as part of a set with a duvet cover. However, you can also buy a separate pillowcase when you have a specific preference, for example, to protect your skin and/or hair, or as an extra layer (such as protection for your pillow).
Percale cotton and cotton sateen pillowcases are both highly breathable and wonderfully supple. A cotton sateen pillowcase also has an extra luxurious look thanks to its subtle sheen. Bamboo and Tencel have the unique advantage of high moisture absorption, and many of our customers rate a Tencel pillowcase as the best buy. Tencel is a highly sustainable material, very strong, and at the same time silky soft. Because Tencel is similar to silk, it creates very little friction, hair stays smooth and glossy. That is why the best pillowcases are made from Tencel: exceptionally durable and beautifully soft.
The benefits of a Tencel or silk pillowcase
✔ fewer fine lines & wrinkles
✔ less hair breakage & less hair loss
✔ hair stays fresher for longer (so you can wash it less often)
✔ anti-static & temperature-regulating
✔ ideal for sensitive skin and allergies

Pillow cover – is that the same as a pillowcase?
To answer the question straight away: a pillow cover or cushion cover is simply another name for a pillowcase. Pillow covers are designed to protect your pillow and provide additional comfort. Of course, this does not only apply to the pillow on your bed you can also use a pillow cover for cushions on your sofa. Besides these practical reasons, it has become increasingly important (especially in the living room) for the pillow cover to match your interior beautifully.
You will therefore find a wide range of pillow covers in various designs and colours. When choosing a pillow cover for your sofa cushions, keep in mind that spills happen more quickly on a sofa. It is therefore wise to choose a pillow cover with good moisture absorption and one that can be washed easily.

Pillowcase 60x70 or pillowcase 40x60 – which size should I choose?
The right pillowcase size is essential for both preserving your pillow and ensuring optimal comfort. A pillowcase that is too tight can make your pillow feel firmer than intended, while one that is too large can cause excess fabric and discomfort. A 60x70 cm pillowcase is the standard size in the Netherlands and Belgium. A 40x60 cm pillowcase is typically used for a child’s pillow or a travel pillow. Use the table below to find the right match for your type of pillow.
| Size (cm) | Pillow Type | Features |
|---|---|---|
| 60 x 70 cm | Standard (Netherlands & Belgium) | The most commonly used size for standard pillows. |
| 50 x 70 cm | Ergonomic / International | Often used for extra length in bed. |
| 40 x 60 cm | Children’s pillow / Travel pillow | Ideal for toddlers and compact for travelling. |
| 40 x 80 cm | German standard | Popular for those who prefer extra width in bed (less height). |
| 80 x 80 cm | Large square, German standard | Classic size, often used as decoration or a support cushion. |
How do you determine the right size for your pillowcase?
Measuring your pillow may seem simple, but because pillows have volume (thickness), the size of a filled pillow can be misleading. Follow these steps to ensure the perfect fit:
- Measure the flat cover (the ticking): Place your pillow on a flat surface. Do not measure over the curve of the pillow. Instead, hold the side seams and measure the width and length from seam to seam.
- Take thickness into account: Do you have a very thick or firmly filled pillow? Never choose a pillowcase that is exactly the same size as the ticking. Allow 1 to 2 cm of extra space in width. A pillowcase that is too tight compresses the filling, making your pillow feel firmer than intended.
- Check the type of pillow:
- Standard pillow: In the Netherlands and Belgium, this is almost always 60x70 cm. Do you have a 60x60 cm pillow? In most cases, you can still use a 60x70 pillowcase, simply tuck the extra fabric neatly underneath the pillow.
- Ergonomic pillow: These pillows (often made of memory foam or latex) usually have non-standard sizes such as 50x70 cm or 40x60 cm. An exact fit is essential to prevent the pillow from shifting.
Expert tip: Do you have a pillow with a zip along the side? Measure the height of the raised edge (the border) as well. If it is higher than 5 cm, we recommend choosing a slightly roomier pillowcase.
Frequently asked questions about pillowcases
Why should I use a pillowcase?
We always recommend using a pillowcase, not only for decorative purposes in your bedroom. The main reason is to protect your pillow. A pillowcase prevents perspiration from penetrating the pillow filling. If you also use a molton pillow protector underneath, you protect your pillow optimally and significantly extend its lifespan.
Which pillowcase is good for the skin?
Some pillowcases offer not only protection but also cosmetic benefits. This mainly applies to silk and Tencel pillowcases. These materials help reduce wrinkles during sleep. Because the fabric is so smooth, it does not crease against your face, which may help slow down or reduce the formation of sleep lines.
Which pillowcase is good for your hair?
Silk and Tencel pillowcases are also beneficial for your hair. In addition to being gentle on the skin, they help prevent tangling during sleep. Because there is minimal friction with Tencel or silk, your hair remains smoother and frizz is reduced.

Why choose a silk pillowcase?
A silk pillowcase is an investment in your personal care. Unlike cotton, silk does not draw moisture away from your skin and hair. This helps night creams stay in place and reduces frizz. Silk is also naturally temperature-regulating.
What is the difference between Tencel™ and bamboo pillowcases?
Although both fabrics are known for their softness, Tencel™ (made from eucalyptus) is even more effective at wicking away moisture and has a more environmentally advanced production process.
What is a hotel closure pillowcase?
Pillowcases can close in different ways. Some have a zip fastening, while others feature a hotel closure. A hotel closure has an envelope-style opening at the side with an inner flap. This keeps the pillow neatly in place and provides a luxurious, tidy appearance.
Pillowcase with zip
A pillowcase with a zip has the fastening discreetly placed at the side, so you will not feel it during use.
How do I iron a pillowcase?
Many modern fabrics no longer require ironing. However, you may prefer a perfectly smooth finish. Select the highest temperature suitable for the fabric (always check the care label first). This allows the iron to glide smoothly over your bedding and pillowcase, leaving a crease-free surface in no time.
Pillowcase 60x70
The 60x70 pillowcase is the standard size in the Netherlands and Belgium. It is also the standard size included with most duvet cover sets.
Pillowcase 50x70
The 50x70 pillowcase is becoming increasingly popular. This size offers 10 cm of additional length in bed, which can ultimately enhance sleeping comfort.
Do I really need a molton pillow protector?
Yes, we strongly recommend it. A molton pillow protector is placed underneath your regular pillowcase. It acts as a buffer that absorbs perspiration and oils before they reach the pillow filling. This keeps your pillow hygienic and significantly extends its lifespan.
How often should I replace my pillowcase?
The average lifespan of a pillowcase is 3 to 5 years. It will remain in good condition for longer if you follow the washing instructions on the care label. A pillowcase mainly helps extend the lifespan of your pillow — especially if you use a molton protector underneath your regular pillowcase for extra hygiene and freshness.
How should I wash my pillowcase?
Each material has its own care instructions. Silk, for example, is delicate and should not be washed at 60°C. Cotton, bamboo and Tencel are less delicate and can generally be washed at higher temperatures. However, we always advise following the instructions on the care label.
