Upholstered bed vs box spring

Because upholstered beds and box spring beds both feature upholstered surfaces, many people tend to mix the two up. But the construction of these two types of beds is very different. Upholstered beds consist of a classic bed frame, made up of bed legs, a frame that holds the slatted base, and optionally a centre beam for support.

Box spring beds, as the English name suggests, are built up from “boxes”. A sprung base, also known as a box spring, forms the foundation of the bed and stands on legs. A mattress sits on top of the base, and finally a mattress topper often forms the last layer of the box spring bed. If you want an upholstered bed purely for visual reasons, an upholstered bed is often a more affordable alternative compared to a box spring.
