Down 4-Season Duvet
If you're looking for a duvet for both the warm summer months and the cold winter nights, then a down 4-seasons duvet is highly recommended.
A 4-seasons duvet consists of 2 separate parts, a summer part (warmth class 4) and a spring and autumn part (warmth class 3), which when combined form a lovely warm winter duvet (warmth class 1).
Down is the soft, fluffy part that protects birds from the cold. Down consists of thousands of tiny pieces, which have an insulating effect. So a down 4-seasons duvet keeps you wonderfully warm in the winter and nice and cool in the summer at the same time.
If you naturally perspire a lot, then a down 4-seasons duvet is ideal for you. The still air, which is located between the down clusters, absorbs moisture very quickly, but releases it just as easily into the outside air.
If you perspire a lot, a down 4-seasons duvet will flatten more quickly. You will then need to air the down 4-seasons duvet more often; plumping it by hand is also an option.
Goose down or duck down 4-seasons duvet?
In general, a duck down 4-seasons duvet is cheaper than a goose down 4-seasons duvet. It is a misconception that a goose down 4-seasons duvet is inherently better than a duck down 4-seasons duvet.
However, it is true that the insulation capacity of a goose down 4-seasons duvet is slightly higher than that of a duck down 4-seasons duvet. The down clusters of the goose are generally larger than those of the duck. As a result, the fill power and volume of a goose down 4-seasons duvet are usually also greater than those of a duck down 4-seasons duvet. Due to this combination of factors, a goose down 4-seasons duvet is somewhat more popular.
Which down 4-seasons duvet is right for me?
The rule of thumb is that the higher the down content of a down 4-seasons duvet (e.g. 90% down + 10% feathers), the lighter, more supple and more comfortable the 4-seasons duvet is. Fill power is an important measure of the quality of down.
Another important indicator is the fill weight of the down 4-seasons duvet. However, on their own, these indicators are not very useful. You understand that simply stating the fill power is insufficient because the insulation value also depends on the fill weight. What is more important for you is to know whether the down 4-seasons duvet is warm enough and yet not too warm. That ultimately determines your sleeping comfort.
Maintaining a down 4-seasons duvet
A down 4-seasons duvet is normally washable up to 40 degrees, provided you can also dry it with circulating air (tumble dryer). This ensures that the down is re-inflated and regains its volume. Always wash a down 4-seasons duvet according to the instructions on the care label!
TIP! When your down 4-seasons duvet has become a bit flat, give it a makeover in the tumble dryer (preferably a 'cool' or 'airing' programme). When you put a tennis ball in with it, your down duvet will be well plumped and regain its volume.
The lifespan of a down 4-seasons duvet is largely determined by its maintenance. With normal maintenance, you will enjoy a good quality down 4-seasons duvet for about 10 years. Although your down 4-seasons duvet may still be perfectly adequate afterwards, it should actually be replaced for hygiene reasons.
