The Best Mattress
The best mattress, just like bedding and a fitted sheet, is essential for your sleep experience. But how do you find the right one online? It can seem like quite a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be.
If you don’t have any physical complaints and are simply looking for a comfortable mattress, you can focus purely on sleeping comfort. In that case, our Savanne pocket sprung mattress is highly recommended. It’s an excellent mattress as a base, with you choosing the final feel that suits you best. For example, a latex mattress offers a very different sleeping comfort compared to a memory foam mattress.
Just like a pillow, each mattress type has its own unique properties. To summarise, we’ve put the specific features of each mattress type into a clear overview for you. You can find this in our mattress scorecard.
If physical complaints are the starting point for your search for a new mattress, then your focus should be on the supportive qualities of the mattress. Again, a pocket sprung mattress is an excellent base choice, as is an orthopaedic mattress. With the Matrair air mattress and the Savanne Modular pocket sprung mattress, you can adjust the firmness/softness of the mattress yourself, at any time you like. With a Matrair air mattress and the Savanne Modular mattress, you’re therefore guaranteed perfect support for the whole body. Protect your mattress with a mattress protector or a molton, as this can extend its lifespan.
Whatever the starting point of your search, in both cases your sleeping position should be the deciding factor for your final choice. With our mattress guide we’ll lead you, using clear explanations and a few simple questions, to the perfect mattress that fully matches your personal sleep needs. When choosing your mattress, take your weight, height, sleeping position and preferred comfort level into account.

Mattress Guide
With the help of our mattress guide, you can quickly find the perfect mattress by answering a few simple questions.
What should you look out for when buying a mattress?
Choosing a type of mattress is a matter of personal preference. One person has very different requirements for adaptability (how the mattress moulds to your body) than another. For example, if you get warm very quickly, we wouldn’t immediately recommend a cold foam or memory foam mattress. The solid core of these mattress types struggles to release heat, which can quickly lead to heat build-up (trapped warmth). A pocket sprung mattress is a much better choice in that case. It has a very open core, which creates a fresh, clean sleeping environment.
A good mattress is the foundation of a good night’s sleep. But what makes a mattress “good”? A mattress moulds to the shape of your body. This is especially important for prominent areas such as the hips and shoulders. We call these pressure points. In addition, the mattress should provide extra support for the back, waist and neck. This is why a mattress is divided into several comfort zones.
- A good mattress supports* the right areas: the shoulders, the pelvis and the ankles.
- A good mattress fills the hollow areas, such as the curve of the spine when someone lies on their side or back. This property works particularly well with a latex mattress and memory foam, also known as a visco mattress.
- A good mattress ventilates and insulates. Everyone perspires during sleep. You don’t always notice it, usually you don’t, but it does happen. It’s extremely important that moisture is removed properly. A damp environment is an ideal breeding ground for mould and bacteria. In that case, a pocket sprung mattress is the best choice.

What is your sleeping position?
Your sleeping position is very important when choosing a mattress. Your sleeping position determines where the mattress needs to support you.
Mattresses for side sleepers
If you are a side sleeper, it’s important that your spine stays in a straight line while you sleep. For that, you need a supportive mattress and a good pillow. Your preference for mattress firmness and pillow height naturally varies from person to person. In principle, any mattress type could be suitable. However, the softer the mattress, the firmer/higher your pillow needs to be. This is simply because with a softer mattress, your shoulder sinks further into the mattress, and the space between your head and the mattress that needs filling becomes larger.
Mattresses for back sleepers
If you are a back sleeper, it’s important that your body maintains its natural S-shaped curve. You also want your mattress to provide enough support for your lower back. Which mattress suits you best varies per person. One person prefers a firmer mattress, such as a cold foam mattress. However, the Savanne pocket sprung mattress also offers perfect support exactly where your body needs it. By choosing from the different comfort levels, you can easily decide the firmness/softness of the mattress yourself.
Mattresses for front sleepers
Sleeping on your front is not the best sleeping position. Your lower back, in particular, takes a lot of strain. Our advice is therefore to try to become a side sleeper or back sleeper. The Sleepmate can help you with that. If you really can’t sleep any other way and you are a front sleeper, it’s important that your lower back doesn’t sink too far and your spine stays straight while you sleep. In that case, we recommend a slightly firmer mattress with an open core (highly breathable).
What mattress size suits me?
The standard mattress length is 200 cm. For people taller than 180 cm, we recommend a mattress length of 210 or 220 cm. The width of a single mattress can vary from 70 cm to 120 cm. Anything wider than 140 cm is considered a double mattress. With a wider and longer mattress, load capacity and freedom of movement increase. The wider your single or double mattress is, the more comfortably you’ll sleep.
Tip! Would you like more sleeping space, but your bedroom or existing bed doesn’t allow for it? Then choose a pillow that is 40 or 50 cm deep instead of the standard 60 cm, this gives you 10–20 cm extra sleeping space!
How firm should my mattress be?
Firmness is determined by your weight, body shape and personal preference, among other factors. This differs for everyone, but as a general rule we recommend a firm mattress for people who weigh more than 120 kg. Pocket springs and cold foam are materials that generally provide firmer support and are therefore more suitable for a higher body weight. In that case, we advise against memory foam or polyether. You sink too deeply into these, meaning your body doesn’t get the support it needs.
Protecting your mattress.
To extend the lifespan of your mattress, we recommend using a mattress protector (mattress protective cover) or a waterproof mattress protector.
