Origin of our WonderWol - Wol Fabryk Fryslân

Wol Fabryk Fryslân is a unique local initiative dedicated to the sustainable, circular processing of Frisian sheep’s wool. Working closely with local sheep farmers, the wool is collected directly at source. Where sheep’s wool was once often seen as a waste product with little value, Wol Fabryk Fryslân gives it a second life as high-quality local products.

After delivery, the wool is carefully sorted by quality and suitability. Suitable wool is then processed in their own wool washery, where it is thoroughly cleaned using a specialised, environmentally friendly washing process. This forms the basis for various products, such as our WonderWol or filling wool. In this way, an honest chain is created: from the Frisian landscape, to local processing, to an end product that is used in people’s homes.

Wool that is not suitable for use in pillows or duvets is also given a sustainable destination. This wool is processed into wool hydro granules, an innovative product that can be used in horticulture and agriculture. Thanks to wool’s natural properties, retaining moisture and slowly releasing nutrients, it is an ideal circular fertiliser and soil improver. This makes wool a local, sustainable and fully natural alternative to artificial fertiliser.

Alongside the production of new wool products, recycling existing wool duvets and pillows also plays an important role. In collaboration with processors and technology partners, work is being done towards a closed-loop system in which wool can be reused time and time again. That way, nothing is wasted and the value of this beautiful natural product is preserved for the region.
