Cotton Duvet
Cotton is a 100% natural fibre, derived from the cotton plant. In addition to the well-known qualities of natural fibres (excellent insulation as well as breathability), another major advantage of a cotton duvet is that it can be washed at a high temperature and is therefore anti-allergenic. This makes it ideal for people with allergies as well as for young children (a washable duvet is always useful in the event of little accidents). A cotton duvet is also tumble dryer safe, which is certainly convenient.
A cotton duvet is slightly heavier than, for example, a synthetic or down duvet, but still considerably lighter than a wool duvet.
The benefits of a cotton duvet at a glance:
- A cotton duvet is strong and hard-wearing.
- A cotton duvet absorbs moisture well.
- A cotton duvet is boil-wash safe and can therefore be washed at high temperatures.
- A cotton duvet has only a low tendency to build up static electricity.

Cotton Duvet, Simply Fantastic
A cotton duvet is a favourite for many people. Cotton owes this popularity to its versatility. First and foremost, cotton is a natural material, which offers many advantages compared to synthetic materials. Synthetic materials are produced using chemical substances that may cause harm to people and the environment, whereas natural materials such as cotton do not.
Unlike synthetic fabrics, cotton is also a wonderfully breathable material. The fabric allows air to circulate and ventilates well. For this reason, a cotton duvet is very suitable for people with allergies. Because a cotton duvet can be washed easily, sometimes even at higher temperatures, house dust mites have little chance of surviving. Thanks to the ventilating and breathable qualities of cotton, clammy nights will become a thing of the past. Cotton is also known for its moisture absorption, which further proves that a cotton duvet will never feel stuffy. Cotton can absorb up to 20% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp.

Summer Cotton Duvet
During the summer, nights sometimes cool down slowly. A cotton summer duvet is therefore wonderful to sleep under. It feels pleasantly cool and is also lightweight. Unlike a down duvet, which you may snuggle into during winter months, you can easily fold back your cotton summer duvet if it becomes too warm. If you tend to perspire during warm and humid summer nights, it is important to pay attention to the moisture absorption capacity when purchasing a cotton duvet. This helps prevent waking up drenched in sweat and having to wash your bedding every day.

Cotton Satin Duvet, Pure Comfort
A cotton satin duvet is a delight to sleep under. A cotton satin duvet is particularly pleasant during warm summer nights, when falling asleep can sometimes be difficult due to the heat. Cotton breathes and is capable of absorbing sufficient moisture. When you perspire during sleep, the moisture is easily absorbed by the cotton duvet. When combined with a cotton duvet cover, you will experience the full benefits of cotton.
Enjoy a Healthy Night’s Sleep
If you want to sleep comfortably throughout the year, choose the right cotton duvet for each season. For the warm summer months, Weids Living and Sleeping recommends a cotton satin duvet. These duvets are light and cool, making them very comfortable. If you prefer to sleep under your cotton duvet even during warm nights, for example to avoid mosquito bites, then a comfortable cotton satin duvet is an excellent choice.
Maintenance of a Cotton Duvet
A cotton duvet can easily be washed frequently in the washing machine without immediate loss of quality. Always follow the instructions on the care label. After removing the duvet from the washing machine, it is best to spin it briefly before placing it in the dryer. This prevents the dryer from making loud knocking noises caused by uneven weight distribution.

The Story of Cotton
Cotton is a highly valuable crop because only about 10% of the raw weight is lost during processing. Once traces of wax, protein and similar substances are removed, a natural polymer of pure cellulose remains. This cellulose is arranged in a way that gives cotton its unique properties of strength, durability and absorption, although cotton has relatively little elasticity. Each fibre consists of twenty to thirty layers of cellulose neatly twisted around each other.
The cotton fibre has a characteristic structure resembling a miniature hollow fire hose twisted around its axis. This creates corkscrew-like twists that allow fibres to interlock during spinning, making it possible to spin very fine yarns.
The bond created by these twists is called the spin structure of cotton. The fibre is hollow and the hollow space is known as the lumen. The staple length (average fibre length) of cotton varies from 10 to 50 mm depending on the type and origin. The longest fibres are best suited for producing fine, smooth yarns and are therefore the most expensive. The outside of the cotton fibre is covered with a waxy layer known as the cuticle. Frequently Asked Questions about Cotton Duvets
Why should I choose a cotton duvet?
Cotton has been the most popular choice in the Netherlands for decades. It is a 100% natural material that excels in ventilation and moisture absorption. It feels slightly heavier and sturdier than bamboo or down, which many people find comforting and secure while sleeping.
Is a cotton duvet suitable if I sweat a lot?
Absolutely. Cotton is known for its excellent absorbent capacity. It easily absorbs perspiration and releases it into the surrounding air. As a result, your bed remains dry, even during warm summer nights or when you have a fever.
How warm is a cotton duvet in winter?
Cotton naturally provides less insulation than wool or down. In a typical Dutch home with central heating, a four-season cotton duvet is the best solution. This allows you to combine a thin summer section with a thicker autumn section to create a warm winter duvet.
What is the difference between a cotton filling and a cotton cover?
This is an important question. The cover (ticking) is the outer casing of the duvet, while the filling is what is inside it. For the best experience, choose a duvet where both the cover and the filling are made from 100% cotton, ensuring maximum breathability.
What is a good cotton duvet?
Cotton duvets are available in several variations. The summer duvet (warmth class 4) is suitable for warm summer nights. The all-year cotton duvet (warmth class 3) can sometimes be used year-round in bedrooms with a fairly constant temperature but is mostly used in spring and autumn. For cold winter nights, we recommend a four-season cotton duvet (warmth class 1). This duvet consists of two parts: the summer duvet and the all-year duvet, which can be combined. Together they provide comfortable warmth, allowing you to sleep warmly and comfortably even on cold nights.
What is the advantage of a fully cotton duvet?
A fully cotton duvet absorbs moisture extremely well, preventing clammy nights. Perspiration is absorbed by the cotton and quickly released again. This also helps the duvet dry quickly. In the morning, when you open and air your duvet, cotton will quickly feel dry and fresh again. A fully cotton duvet is very easy to wash and can even be placed in the dryer, making it highly popular, versatile and durable — a valuable addition to any bedroom.
Is cotton suitable for people with allergies?
Yes, provided it is washed regularly. Because cotton can be washed at high temperatures, it is very suitable for people with house dust mite allergies. However, keep in mind that cotton naturally retains slightly more dust than materials such as bamboo, so regular airing is recommended.
How do I wash my cotton duvet?
One of the major advantages of cotton is its ease of use. Most cotton duvets can be safely washed in the washing machine at 40°C or 60°C. Washing at 60 degrees is ideal for effectively killing bacteria and house dust mites, contributing to a fresh and healthy sleeping environment.
