How white noise helps you sleep

A good night’s sleep is not something that comes naturally to everyone.

If you suffer from broken or sleepless nights, you’ll often first look at your sleep setup, such as your mattress, duvet, or pillow. When all of that seems fine, you might turn your attention to stress, exercise, or even your diet. If you don’t find the answers you’re looking for there, it can become quite discouraging. And yes, we recognise that too.

When you regularly lie awake at night, everything can become a distraction. A car passing by, a yowling tomcat, or a dripping tap within earshot. After a while, those sounds can become almost unbearable. The result is a disrupted night’s sleep and not feeling very refreshed the next morning.

What exactly is ‘white noise’?

Something you might not immediately think of as a solution is the use of ‘white noise’. You may recognise this phenomenon as the static sound that used to play on your television when there was no signal. That noise is a classic example of white noise.

Other familiar examples include the monotonous sound of a hairdryer, a vacuum cleaner, a car engine, or even your own heartbeat.

What is white noise good for?

“How can that noise help me with my sleep?” I hear you thinking. And actually, that question is very easy to answer.

But to answer that question, it helps to dive a little deeper into the concept of white noise. Its consistent, steady sound (at the same frequency) helps to ‘mask’ other noises, such as the yowling tomcat mentioned earlier. It distracts your brain, allowing it to relax and making it easier to fall asleep. It’s something that has long been used as a sleep aid for babies, but it works just as well for adults.

Which white noise machine?

We’re proud to say that we now also offer our own white noise machines in our range. And you can even choose between two options. You can either go for just the white noise machine, or opt for the wake-up light with a white noise function.

If you’re still using a traditional alarm clock or your phone as an alarm, we highly recommend the latter. A wake-up light helps you wake up gently with light and sounds that gradually increase from very soft to full intensity. What’s more, it removes the need to have your phone in the bedroom altogether. Hoe white noise gebruiken?

White noise is simulated using what is known as a white noise machine. These machines produce a continuous, monotonous sound, such as rainfall or wind rustling through leaves. You can use this to help you fall asleep more easily. The sound can then gradually fade out over time using a timer, or you can choose to keep the white noise playing throughout the night. It is also said that white noise can help you enter REM sleep more easily and transition between sleep stages. The benefit of this is that you sleep more deeply and therefore wake up feeling more rested.

White noise machines have been used for babies for years, but increasingly they are also being used by adults as a solution for light or poor sleepers. We certainly swear by them ourselves. And suddenly, a good night’s sleep feels very much within reach again!
