In the past, when everything was better, but not quite...
... "we" used to sleep under blankets those pastel-colored woolen ones, for example where in the dead of winter, you’d wake up to find frost on them. These stories resurface in the family every year around January and February.
The nostalgia is wonderful, but we are all quite happy that our homes are better insulated and the frost now stays firmly outside. And, perhaps even more importantly, that the duvet has since become a permanent staple in every bedroom. A solution for every budget.
What is a 4-season duvet?
A 4-season duvet is exactly what the name suggests: a duvet for all four seasons and every type of weather. With a single purchase, you can sleep wonderfully cool in the summer and toasty warm in the winter. The solution is simple: the 4-season duvet consists of two parts. A summer section (warmth class 4) with a low fill weight that stays nice and cool, and a spring/autumn section (warmth class 3) which is slightly heavier due to a higher fill weight.
These duvets are very easy to connect, sometimes using press studs (snaps) and sometimes with a zipper (along the sides). This keeps the parts neatly together, providing you with a wonderfully thick duvet (warmth class 1) for those truly cold winter nights, ensuring you sleep comfortably even during the aforementioned frost.
What is the difference between a 4-season duvet and an 'all-season' or 'all-year' duvet?
A 4-season duvet and an all-year duvet (also called an all-season duvet) are quite often confused with one another. That’s understandable, of course. An 'all-year' or 'all-season' duvet implies that you can use it year-round. If your bedroom maintains a fairly constant temperature throughout the year between 15 and 20°C then we do indeed recommend an all-year duvet.
HOWEVER, if your bedroom temperature fluctuates with the seasons and is (much) colder in the winter than in the summer, an all-year duvet will likely be too warm for you in the summer and not warm enough in January or February. In that case, we recommend choosing a 4-season duvet. The term ‘maximum freedom of choice’ is often used for 4-season duvets. That’s because you can always decide for yourself which part of the duvet to use, giving you total control over how warm or cool you sleep.

What is the best 4-season duvet?
Naturally, the question arises: which is the best 4-season duvet? But there isn’t just one answer. Here, too, it’s a case of different strokes for different folks. One person might swear by a wool duvet, which often feels a bit heavier and truly rests "on" you. Another might go all-in for a down duvet. Down is known for its airy, fluffy feel. For an eco-conscious choice, Tencel and bamboo are often favorites. And the crowd-favorite, cotton, is frequently chosen because it is highly washable (for a great overview of washable duvets, check out our blog on the subject here) and has been a reliable choice for years. And let’s not forget silk, which provides a luxury feel like no other it's soft, supple, and relaxes all the senses.
So, the "best" duvet is different for everyone. If you’re struggling to decide (or can’t see the forest for the trees), call us, email us, or chat with us. We’d love to help you find the best match for your sleep!
