Bedtime Stories: Reading Before Sleep.
In our house, this is the moment we close the day. We all gather on Mom and Dad’s big bed to read a book together. A fixed routine is wonderful for many children, and the need for that final moment of connection is often very strong. It’s Mom’s familiar and comforting voice leading the way from a busy day into a peaceful night.
Every child has their own preference when it comes to books. In the Netherlands, almost all books by Annie M.G. Schmidt are favorites Jip and Janneke, for example, can be found in nearly every household. A relatively new crowd favorite is Jochem Myjer with his book The Gorgels; in no time at all, this book and its sequels have popped up in every top 10 list, and as far as our children are concerned, quite rightly so.
If you’re looking for tips for great books to add to your bedtime ritual, these are specifically for you. They also make wonderful birthday or maternity gifts.

Bedtime with Miffy - Dick Bruna (0-3 years)
We all know Miffy (originally known as Nijntje in Dutch); she is everyone's favorite rabbit. She goes on all sorts of adventures. In Bedtime with Miffy, she takes us through her evening ritual: eating, putting on pajamas, brushing teeth, and reading a book. Just like your little one. A relatable story for the very youngest readers.

Can't You Sleep, Little Bear? - Martin Waddell (ages 3+)
This children's book is a true classic. The story resonates deeply with young children. It’s about Little Bear, who can't sleep because he is afraid of the dark. Big Bear brings him all sorts of lights so that Little Bear doesn't have to be afraid anymore. With beautiful illustrations, it is highly relatable for any child who finds the dark a little bit scary.

All Nonsense - Paul van Loon (ages 5-8)
Paul van Loon is famous for his thrilling tales, but also for his fantastically imaginative stories. For younger children, the stories are less spooky and instead full of humor and wonder. Vladimir is the protagonist in All Nonsense. Every night, he hears a rustling sound. "Pssst," it goes, and then a little man appears, no bigger than a soda bottle. He takes Vladimir to The Land Behind the Wallpaper. A fantastic story for children aged 5 and up.

The Wolf is Really Not Coming - Myriam Ouyessad (ages 3-12)
In this book, the lead role also belongs to a rabbit. It is an ingenious picture book where the illustrations tell a slightly different story than the text. Mother Rabbit gives all the reasons why the wolf definitely isn't coming, but Little Rabbit still doesn't want to go to sleep. Meanwhile, on the other side of the pages, you see the wolf ignoring the rules at every turn. This makes the story extra exciting to read. The book takes a surprising turn, allowing children to go to sleep with peace of mind. A wonderful book to close the day together.

The Sleep Book - Dr. Seuss (ages 6-9)
Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book is a household favorite. The entire book is written in rhyme, making it a joy to read aloud. In the story, a small bug named Van Vleck starts to yawn, and before you know it, everyone is yawning and sleeping because nothing is quite as contagious as a yawn. With this book, you and your children are guaranteed to start yawning along, making the journey to dreamland effortless. It features the iconic Dr. Seuss illustrations and is a delight for young and old alike.
