Folding or sliding: how do you save space?

I love it. Friends or family who unexpectedly stay for dinner or an overnight visit.

A table full of delicious snacks, accompanied by a good glass of wine and even better conversation. But after a few drinks, it’s no longer responsible to get behind the wheel, so we always keep a guest in mind for those moments. Or two, or three :)

However, with a family of four children, we don’t have an extra bedroom specifically for guests. That truly seems like the pinnacle of luxury, but until then, we have to make do with creating extra sleeping spaces in the rooms we already have. This often involves shuffling mattresses around, pulling camping beds for the little ones out of the closet, and setting up extra beds.

Fortunately, there are alternatives so you don't have to lug your entire household inventory around. Handy and space-saving solutions, specifically designed for these occasions.

Folding bed with spiral base

What makes a good folding bed?

In the past, we used to have one of those stretchers at home, with springs on the side holding the fabric base together. Comfort was nowhere to be found, making it a less-than-successful experience for our guests. Fortunately, today there are beautiful folding beds available with high-quality mattresses that provide proper support.

Folding beds can roughly be divided into two categories: those with a slatted base or those with a spiral base. A folding bed with a slatted base is often a more affordable option, still providing decent comfort. They are compact, lightweight, and therefore a very practical solution. Folding beds with a spiral base are also perfectly suitable for longer use. You often see these models in hotels, bed & breakfasts, or hospitals.

The sturdiness of the spiral base ensures optimal support. A good night's rest is guaranteed. So, if you are looking for a truly high-quality guest bed for your visitors, we unhesitatingly recommend the folding bed with a spiral base.

Trundle bed

A trundle bed: Ideal for two people

A trundle bed is, above all, very practical and space-saving. These consist of two beds where one bed 'folds down' and slides under the other. This allows you to literally conjure up an extra sleeping spot in seconds. A second advantage is that it can immediately serve as a double bed if desired. You often see extra bed drawers in children's rooms for quick sleepover setups. While these may have a slight height difference, for children's parties and guests, this is usually never an issue.

The trundle bed with a cross-tensioned base is a fantastic guest bed. Thanks to the spiral base, this metal trundle bed offers excellent support and great comfort. You can comfortably sleep on this bed for many nights in a row, or even use it permanently. A quick tip: keep the height of the mattress in mind. For the bottom bed, we recommend a maximum height of 21 cm. This way, you still have a wonderfully thick mattress, but it will easily slide under the top bed. And voila, the room is instantly tidy again.

Sofa bed or daybed

A sofa bed as the ultimate space-saver

If you really have no room for a dedicated guest area but still want to be prepared for extra visitors, a sofa bed or daybed is a true lifesaver! For student rooms or teen bedrooms, a sofa bed is the perfect solution for friends who want to stay over. By day it’s a couch, and by evening you have an extra bed in a split second.

Daybeds come in all shapes, sizes, and designs, so there is a beautiful sofa bed to match every interior. All that’s left is to grab the bedding. You don't need to purchase an expensive duvet for guests. We often recommend natural products like cotton, wool, or bamboo for daily use. However, for a temporary sleeping spot or when being budget-conscious, a synthetic duvet is a great alternative.

Besides being friendly to your wallet, a synthetic duvet has the major advantage of being highly washable. This ensures a comfortable, fresh, and hygienic bed for your guests. We have now put together a set with a super soft, feather-light duvet plus a soft, resilient pillow all at a price you simply can't resist!

Whether you choose a folding bed, a trundle bed, or a sofa bed, you can transform your home into a hotel in no time and pour your guests another glass of wine with peace of mind. We say: Cheers!
