One group grew up with kapok and spent (at least part of) their childhood sleeping on it. The other group simply shrugs or looks puzzled at the word ‘kapok.’ For those in the latter category: keep reading, a whole world of kapok is about to open up for you.
Where does kapok come from?
Kapok is a fiber (wonderfully soft and ‘cotton-like’) that grows on the kapok tree (which has the most beautiful flowers, but that's a side note). This tree is mostly found in tropical climates such as South and Central America, Asia, and West Africa. The tree produces egg-shaped fruits, and inside these fruits, you'll find the soft white cotton-like fluff: the kapok.
Kapok is grown in an exceptionally environmentally friendly way. In every sense, kapok is a 100% natural filling. It is often referred to as "plant down." Unlike traditional down, kapok feels slightly firmer, which gives it a nice, stable structure making it absolutely ideal for filling pillows.
Why choose a kapok pillow?
Because of its soft yet firm structure, kapok is extremely well-suited as a filling material for pillows. Furthermore, the downy material is highly malleable. You can fluff and mold a kapok pillow until it reaches the exact shape you find comfortable for sleeping. Then, all you have to do is nestle your head into it and drift off...
In addition to excellent heat insulation, kapok also offers great moisture absorption and superb ventilation. This breathability allows any perspiration to evaporate quickly. Plus, a kapok pillow is suitable for stomach, side, and back sleepers alike. You rarely see such versatility in a single pillow. The only thing to keep in mind: kapok cannot be washed. Therefore, we always recommend using a molton pillow protector. This way, you don't need to wash the pillow itself, yet it stays fresh and clean. We also recommend plumping your kapok pillow regularly and airing it out occasionally.
Is kapok hypoallergenic?
Kapok has a natural wax coating that protects the fiber and ensures it remains supple. This coating also makes kapok hypoallergenic and prevents allergic reactions. It repels house dust mites, so you won't suffer from sniffles, itching, or respiratory tightness. This waxy layer is the reason why kapok-filled pillows cannot be washed; otherwise, you would wash away this protective layer within a few cycles. This is why we are such fans of molton pillow protectors they keep your pillow fresh and hypoallergenic without the need for washing.
