All Year vs 4 seasons

What is the difference?

What is the difference between an all-year duvet and a four-season duvet? Aren’t they both for the whole year?” This is a question we are asked very regularly. And although that may seem correct, the reality is quite different.

The four seasons we experience in the Netherlands each come with their own temperatures. Naturally, in summer you need a less warm duvet than in winter. That is why we work with warmth classes, where warmth class 4 is the lightest and thinnest, and warmth class 1 is the heaviest and therefore the warmest.

What is a 4-season duvet?

A four-season duvet always consists of two connected duvets: a summer duvet and a spring/autumn duvet. Together, they form warmth class 1, making them ideal for those truly cold winter nights. When separated, you have a wonderfully light duvet for summer and a spring/autumn layer for when the summer duvet alone becomes too cool.

Why would you choose an all-year duvet?

If your bedroom maintains a consistent temperature between 15 and 20 degrees, you will experience little to no impact from seasonal temperature changes. In that case, you essentially only need one duvet all year round neither too warm nor too cool. This is usually slightly warmer than the spring/autumn part of a four-season duvet, typically falling into warmth class 2.

Another reason we often hear for choosing an All Year duvet is the weight of a winter duvet or a combined four-season duvet. These can sometimes feel too heavy, especially for older individuals, who may prefer a single duvet insteadsuch as an All Year duvet.

Which 4-season duvet should you choose?

Once you’ve decided on a four-season duvet, the next question is: which one should you choose? The options are plentiful (as the old saying goes). The material of the duvet is the most important factor. Wool is wonderfully weighty and breathable. Down is light and highly insulating. Cotton is a true favourite thanks to its softness and how comfortably it drapes around you. And if you choose Tencel, you’ll enjoy a fantastic sleep experience and it’s exceptionally easy to wash.

This can be complemented with a bedspread or a wool blanket for colder nights, or replaced with a light sheet during the summer.

Conclusion?

For maximum flexibility, we always recommend a four-season duvet. This way, you’ll have the perfect duvet for every season and every temperature, ensuring a comfortable night’s sleep all year round.
