In this article, we take a closer look at everything you need to know about down duvets, including their benefits and positive qualities, as well as the critical aspects that may be considered disadvantages.
Why do people love down duvets so much?
Down from ducks or geese is a highly luxurious and comfortable choice for duvets and pillows. Whether it’s Hungarian, Siberian or another type of down, there are many reasons why people enjoy sleeping under a down duvet. Down promotes high-quality sleep and is more durable than most other materials, meaning your duvet will last longer.
Down not only offers excellent temperature regulation but also delivers a truly luxurious sleep experience thanks to its high fill power. This ultra-light yet warm material keeps you cool during summer nights and wonderfully warm in winter. It effortlessly adapts to your body temperature and has excellent moisture absorption due to its breathable properties, ensuring uninterrupted and refreshing sleep.
Moreover, down is a sustainable choice. Although the initial investment may be higher, with proper care it lasts significantly longer, making it more cost-effective over time. With high fill power, down duvets provide enhanced comfort and extended durability.

Savanne Nova Scotia Goose Down Spring & Autumn Duvet
The Nova Scotia spring and autumn duvet is cassette stitched (with internal baffle walls) to prevent cold spots. If your bedroom temperature remains fairly cool and stable throughout the year, this duvet can be used all year round. However, if temperatures rise significantly during the summer months, a light and breathable summer duvet (box stitched, warmth class 4) is recommended.
This spring and autumn duvet is a so-called combination duvet. This means it can be paired with the lighter and cooler summer duvet (warmth class 4), which is also available separately. During colder winter months, you can easily connect both parts using button fastenings, creating a wonderfully warm winter duvet (warmth class 1).
If you prefer a complete solution for the entire year, we recommend the Nova Scotia all seasons duvet. This option offers better value, as you purchase both duvet parts together at a more favourable price.

Which is better: more down or more feathers?
Both goose down and duck down duvets offer their own unique advantages. However, when it comes to choosing between the two, goose down is often considered the premium choice, which is reflected in the pricing of the duvets.
Many down duvets are filled with a combination of goose and duck down, and as an online shop, it is extremely difficult to verify the exact ratio. This makes the higher price of goose-down-filled models hard to justify in some cases. At Weids Living & Sleeping, we only stand behind products where the price-quality ratio is transparent and well-founded. Nevertheless, our down-filled collection is of the highest quality, and we are happy to outline the properties of both below:
Goose Down
Goose down provides excellent insulation due to its larger, resilient cluster structure, ensuring warmth even on the coldest nights. Thanks to these insulating properties, the duvet is incredibly fluffy and luxurious—a feel that other materials often lack. Because goose down clusters are larger than duck down, less material is needed to achieve the same warmth class. As a result, goose down offers fantastic quality, making duvets feel exceptionally soft, light, and airy.
Furthermore, goose down is highly durable, meaning your duvet will last longer, making it a smart long-term investment. Goose down is naturally hypoallergenic and ideal for people with allergies. Additionally, it is an eco-friendly byproduct of the food industry, making it a sustainable choice for conscious consumers who value both comfort and the environment.
Duck Down
Duck down offers very good insulation, primarily because duck down duvets are generally thicker than goose down versions to achieve the same warmth. This means duck down duvets often feel even "fluffier," while still providing ample warmth for a comfortable night's rest.
Duck down duvets provide a great balance between comfort and price, making them a budget-friendly and attractive option. Duck down is lightweight and ideal for milder climates. These duvets are also durable, though the life expectancy is slightly lower than that of goose down.
Overall, duck down is easy to maintain and offers a wonderful sleep experience without the premium price tag associated with goose down.
Why is down so expensive?
A simple online search quickly reveals significant price differences between various providers. High-quality down duvets are simply not cheap because the finest materials provide the best performance and durability.
In this search, you will also notice a substantial price gap between duck down and goose down. Weids Living & Sleeping has therefore selected five models above that offer fair pricing and reliable quality you can trust.
How long does a down duvet last?
The lifespan of a down duvet depends on several factors, such as quality, intensity of use, lifestyle, and climate, but maintenance plays the biggest role.
Assuming a down duvet is of high quality, it can easily last at least 7 years under normal use and with strict adherence to proper maintenance. This doesn't mean the duvet disappears after 7 years, but its properties will gradually diminish, meaning it may lose some of its insulating power over time.
Top tips for maintenance and use:
- Rotate your duvets regularly. Do not sleep under the same duvet all year round; adjust your bedding to the season, climate, temperature, or your personal needs.
- Air out your duvet regularly. Hang it out in non-humid weather (indoors or outdoors) so accumulated moisture can evaporate. This prevents musty odors.
- Treat stains immediately if they occur. This keeps the duvet hygienic, clean, and spot-free.
- When switching duvets between seasons, store the aired-out duvet in a breathable storage bag.
- Check for damage or small tears and have them repaired or sewn shut immediately.

What should you do with an old down duvet?
Weids Living & Sleeping helps recycle old duvets. Simply request a free return sticker and help us protect the environment by giving your old duvet a second life.
We have your duvet recycled by our manufacturer, Ducky Dons. The entire duvet is recycled: high-quality down and feathers are reused after an intensive cleaning process and strict quality control. Material that does not pass inspection is processed into organic fertilizers. The covers (ticking) are repurposed into insulation material, cleaning cloths, and building materials. Check out this video to see the recycling process in action.
How often should you wash a down duvet?
Caution is advised when washing a down duvet. Down is a delicate filling material that can degrade with frequent washing or high humidity. Always follow the washing instructions on the label. Use a washing machine with a large drum, select a detergent specifically designed for down, and wash at a low temperature to preserve the clusters.
Use a tumble dryer on a low heat setting and take your time. Add tennis balls to the drum to help fluff up the down during the drying process.
High temperatures can warp down clusters, damaging their insulating properties. The tennis balls help restore the "fill power" and loft, which brings the insulation value back up.
Why might you choose NOT to buy a down duvet?
As with any realistic guide, we must include a critical note. As fantastic as down is, materials like Tencel, cotton, and wool have comparable properties that make them unique. Each material serves different sleep needs.
Regarding down, the main challenge is verifying the exact ratio of duck to goose down. Even for us, as a second-generation sleep specialist, it is difficult to identify the exact percentage of a duvet's filling. This makes quality control sensitive for us and even more so for you as a customer. This transparency issue might be a reason to opt for another natural material instead of down.
However, this does not change the fact that both goose and duck down remain among the most attractive natural products with exceptional properties for a perfect night's sleep.
Does a down duvet become flat?
The risk with a down duvet is that over time, and with intensive use, it can begin to clump or lose its volume. This is what people mean when they say a duvet "goes flat." Down consists of light, airy strands that interweave uniquely to create air pockets, providing excellent insulation and resilience.
If not aired out enough, moisture can cause the down to compress, reducing those air pockets and the duvet's insulating power. The structure and therefore the breathability is lost. This can also be caused by using the wrong detergent or fabric softener. This is why proper maintenance is crucial to keeping your duvet in top condition.
With the right care and attention, your duvet will retain its resilience, benefiting both its appearance and your sleeping comfort.
Does a down duvet smell?
Natural filling materials like goose down, duck down, or wool can sometimes have a natural scent, which is most noticeable when the product is brand new. This is usually because the duvet is placed in an airtight bag immediately after production, preventing it from breathing. Simply air the duvet outdoors to refresh it.
Over time, a scent may also develop, often due to residual natural oils after washing. Duck down and feathers can sometimes have a stronger scent than goose down because of their higher natural oil content.
While washing is possible, it is never beneficial for the long-term quality of the down. Therefore, regular airing is the best way to maintain hygiene and freshness.
Can you be allergic to goose down?
There is no direct link between down and common allergies, which is reassuring for most people. People often associate feather-filled bedding with allergic reactions, but only those specifically allergic to waterfowl feathers experience issues.
Most "bedding allergies" are actually caused by dust mites tiny, invisible organisms that live in every home, especially in textiles like clothing, sofas, carpets, and bedding.
The fact remains that even people with allergies can enjoy the luxury and comfort of down duvets. A down duvet provides warmth, softness, and peace of mind for anyone who values a great night's sleep.
