Lyocell (Tencel) is a man-made fiber of natural origin, made from wood pulp like viscose rayon, spun using a wet-spinning process. The key difference lies in the dissolution of wood fibers; viscose rayon's process is environmentally unfriendly, using harmful chemicals. Lyocell overcomes these drawbacks by using a new solvent (N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide) and a closed-loop process where the solvent is recovered. Lyocell shares properties with viscose but has better wet strength and wrinkles less. It is marketed as Tencel by the Austrian company Lenzing.
